Mike White's Teaching Portfolio

Quote Quilt Project

Student Work

Yep. That's the same quilt from Standard I. I wanted to put it here again because it is a good example of student work. Although, you will find quite a few other examples of student work on this page. You'll even find a couple of rough drafts of the squares of that quilt.

I'll be referencing the work you find on this page throughout the portfolio, so I figured it would be a good idea to give this work it's own page. Following you will find orange boxes just like throughout the rest of the portfolio. Within each box are samples of student work pertaining to a specific activity they have done with me. These include speeches, slogans, short stories, open response, etc. In some of the samples, you'll find handwritten notes by me to the students.

For privacy purposes, I've done my best to hide the names of the students.

Internal Action, External Action, and Interactions - This student work goes specifically with the "The Actor in You" lessons mentioned on the Standard I page. These came from the Step 3 - Second Half - Lesson Plan. These were graded out of 20 points based on the rubric found on the Step 3 - Second Half - Homework.
"A Raisin in the Sun" - There are a few student samples here. These all deal with the play called "A Raisin in the Sun." They were part of "The Actor in You" also as they came from activities mentioned in the book. The first two were scored out of 20 for participation.
Commemorative Speech - The students had to do a speech, as outlined in the Commemorative Speech Handout.
  • Speech Rubric - This was a rubric I filled out for two different students. The notes were transferred to two separate rubrics later.
Easter - This assignment was for one student. This student had Down Syndrome. There were things going on in class that he was having a hard time with, so we spoke with him and after finding out he was going to be in an Easter play, we allowed him to do the following:
Poetry of Sara Holbrook - From the Poetry of Sara Holbrook - Handout Day Two, the following is an example of student work filling out the questions along with my response.
Harlem Renaissance - From the Harlem Renaissance Open Response - Handout, the following are two examples of open response answers along with my response. The answers were graded according to the rubric in the handout and multiplied by 10 for the final grade you see. The students also had to do a webquest based on the Harlem Renaissance. The webquest can be found here. I did not create it, but I have placed a copy of it on my site by permission. My job was to handle explaining it and grading it. Following are examples of their work:
Persuasive Poetry - Throughout the Persuasive Poetry unit, I gave the students a few different assignments.
  • Student Sample - This is from an assignment in which I wanted to explain how a song or poem of their choice was persuasive. Feedback on this was given orally.
Quote Quilt - Remember the quote quilt project? The picture is above. Well, I had them do rough drafts. Following is a sample that contains two rough drafts from two different students.
Setting - In the Setting - Handout, I had the students answer questions about setting. Following are two examples from the students. All of the examples were strong. Scoring was out of 25 points, but they all received the full points. They did a great job.
Chapter 1 - The students had to write the first chapter to a novel. Following is a sample of the first chapter of one of my students. It includes my comments.
Voting Slogan - This assignment comes from the Voting Slogan - Handout.
